Details for next UTAUG meeting

We have received reservations for the Salt Lake City Main Library. Reservations are for the first Tuesday of Feb, Apr, May, and Jun. All rooms were booked on March 7th, so I got reservations for March 14th (2nd Tuesday). If the 2nd Tuesday won't work, we can cancel it and find alternate accomodations. I have requested for the longest period I can. Requests for rooms for the second half of the year may be submitted starting in May, should we find the facilities adequate I will file another request.

We'll see on February 7th if the room size and setup (tables, chairs, screen, etc) work for us. I have not rented an LCD projector as our organization is broke, but hopefully one of us (not me) have access to one that can be brought. Power and network jacks are available on the wall, though they are limited in number. There is wireless networking available. The wireless requires clicking-through on a web page before access is granted. I might recommend that I bring an access point so we can have our own network to play with should we do any Asterisk demonstrations or setups.

Room L-1 ('el minus one' in Library-speak) is downstairs in the children's library section. I don't know if you are familiar with the SLC Library, but when one comes in from outside you are in the "Urban Room" (shops, tables, & etc). When entering the Library proper there is a set of stairs and elevators to the left. If taking the elevators down one floor to the children's section Room L-1 is to the right of the stairs when heading toward the children's section. Restrooms are to the left of the stairs.

This event with meeting location will be posted by the library on their Urban Room plasma-screen display on the day of the event. All library staff are able to provide directions to the room as well as open it for us if it is locked. We have control of the room from 6pm to 9pm on meeting days.

While food is discouraged in the conference rooms, noone seems to get upset about bringing in soda or coffee (available from Joy's in the Urban Room, or the coffee shop on the first floor of the Library).

Some (free evening) parking is available on the streets East and South of the Library but most people will find the spacious parking garage underneath the library more convienent. First half hour is free, then 75 cents for each half-hour thereafter. Payment can be made with cash or credit card, but I don't know about checks. Access to the parking garage is off 400 south (north side of Library) in the middle of the block. Do not attempt to enter from 500 south as this is for Salt Lake City vehicle parking only.

Alternatively the UofU Trax line has a stop directly north of the main entrance.

If you, or anyone else, has any questions please feel free to contact me.

Chris Brown

Thanks, Chris!

very very nice.

we WILL need some networking. if you can bring your access point it might help or we could just bring a switch. we will have several phones set up to test in a make-shift technological petting zoo.

I will make sure we have a projector. do they have a screen/white wall? I will try to bring an asterisk server to connect the phones to -- otherwise we will need some internet.

SLC Main Library address

Yes, there is a screen that, if one can figure out the unmarked switches on the wall, can be lowered. I will bring misc. power, access point, cables, ext. cords, & such as may be helpful.

For those not familiar with Salt Lake City's new main library, I should have provided the address:

Salt Lake City Main Library
210 East 400 South
Salt Lake City UT 84111
(801)524-8200

What topics are we to expect at this next meeting? I note on the announcement for the first meeting we were to discuss how to pronounce "UTAUG". So how is it pronounced?

Hello

Hey,

I'm new to asterisk, but it seems cool. I've been reading about it for a while now. I'm a web app php/mysql guy. I'm planning on coming to the next meeting. I'm looking to set up an asterisk system for a personal project I'm working on. Would anyone be willing to sit down with me, help me set up the system, and start me off on the basics. I would be willing to pay them for their time. I have a linux computer ready. I think it would save me a lot of time doing it this way. If not I'll try to figure things out on my own. The sooner the better.
I live in provo, but i can meet somewhere else.

php/mysql experience can only help -- especially if you are planning to use one of the many web interfaces available for asterisk or if you plan to use mysql to store the extension/user/trunk information. i live in south sandy and would be happy to sit down with you and help you set up a system. however, you can save some time and trouble and have your first system set up in less than a few hours if you visit:

the asterisk@home site

and download their all-in-one iso. the latest one will install a 2.6xxx centos kernel as well as an asterisk install that primarily uses mysql to store user/extension/trunk info and a nice php web interface to manage it all. it is still the familiar asterisk platform underneath so after you have things working you can explore the flat conf files generated by the easy-to-use web interface and see what is going on.

although my first asterisk box was built from scratch on redhat, i think i would have learned asterisk even more quickly had i used asterisk@home the first time around.
